We like almost everything about summer, with just one exception: the bugs.
Whether they’re dive-bombing your latest barbecue, leaving you with itchy bites, or even just ruining what could be an otherwise peaceful evening, it’s definitely time to up your game against these pesky creatures.
If you live in an area with lots of biting flies, mosquitoes, or even the dreaded lantern flies, experts have found the best ways to keep bugs as far away from you as possible in every category—from candles to sprays and even traps—so you can enjoy the rest of your summer in peace.
1. Bug spray

(Amazon)
The first thing most people reach for when fighting irritating insects is bug spray. And while many brands claim to be the best, some don’t seem to even work at all.
The secret? Choosing a spray that’s effective against the exact bugs bothering you.
“Insect repellents with picaridin provide excellent protection from biting flies, while permethrin effectively repels ticks,” says home inspector Hubert Miles.
Another key difference: Picaridin works by creating a barrier on your skin’s surface, but permethrin can be used on clothing to provide lasting protection.
2. Bug-repellent candle

(Amazon)
Sometimes spray isn’t ideal, especially if you’re sitting around a table trying to enjoy a meal without dousing it in chemicals.
When that’s the case, it’s nice to have a go-to candle that will keep the bugs at bay.
For this, Zachary Smith, founder of The Pest Dude, recommends finding a candle that contains “a blend of rosemary, peppermint, and lemongrass essential oils, which are plant-based repellents.”
3. Mosquito patches

(Amazon)
Another spray alternative we’re seeing more and more of right now? Bug patches, which are a great nontoxic alternative for kids or adults with sensitive skin.
The best patches use citronella oil, making them safe for kids and adults alike.
4. Bug zapper

(Amazon)
Sometimes the bug problem becomes so dire the goal isn’t so much to repel the bugs as it is to entirely obliterate them. For this, it’s handy to have a quality bug zapper on hand,
“It’s an effective, chemical-free solution for eliminating mosquitoes and other flying insects,” says Miles.
Another perk? A decent bug zapper will be waterproof, meaning you can keep the buzzing beasts at bay even if it starts drizzling.
5. Bug trap

(Amazon)
Another way to minimize your backyard bug population? By investing in a few bug traps. Traps are another thing that’s highly dependent on the kind of bug you want to eliminate.
Trapping mosquitoes and flies are easy with a trap like this, as well as fruit flies and gnats, making it a perfect choice for your kitchen.
Other ways to fight off bugs
While it’s great to be armed with the best products on the market, there are also several lifestyle changes you can make to minimize your exposure to biting insects this summer.
“Regular mowing, removing standing water, and trimming overgrown bushes can significantly reduce bug populations,” says Clayton.
He also suggests wearing light-colored, long-sleeve clothes in the evening and avoiding perfumes or other scented body products—which will make you all the more susceptible to bites.
